- Determine size of floorcloth, measure and mark with pencil. Use
your straight edge ruler, cut vinyl using utility knife.
(Try to stay as straight as possible)
- Apply first
basecoat of wallboard primer using foam roller, make sure to roll
edges with primer. Allow to dry, based on product
recommendation, and apply another coat.
- After two
coats of wallboard primer, we will apply one to two coats of Gesso
(artist primer). Gesso gives you a nice solid basecoat in
which your acrylic paints will adhere to nicely. Allow
recommended dry time in between coats.
- Apply basecoat color choice for the floorcloth. For this project
we will be basecoating with Americana Titanium White. Make sure
to always roll outside edges of the vinyl.
- I normally will allow all of this paint/basecoating to dry overnight.
(Give it a little cure time)
- Now we will
lay out our stencil patterns and determine how they will fit on
the size floorcloth we have cut. I will first layout our
stencil the Gingham pattern with leaving enough space around the
outer edge for the flower border and the final trim.
- Using Violet Haze and Wisteria we will stencil the Gingham
pattern. This will be accomplished using the dry brush
stencilling technique. (Load brush with acrylic paint and
then off load all paint onto a paper towel)
- After the Gingham is complete, we will stencil the Sweet Flower Vine
around the outside perimeter of the Gingham.
- To complete the stencilling, we will tape off the outside edge to create a
border of color as a finishing touch. This will be approximately
1" stripe. This outside border will still be stencilled
on for uniformity.
- When all stencilling has been accomplished and allowed to dry for 24 to 48
hours, we will apply a final coat of protective varnish.
- Using a foam roller, roll on approximately 4 to 5 coats of Right Step
Varnish. Allow approximately dry time in between coats.
(Right Step Varnish was chosen for the final coat because this
product does not dry stiff and hard. It provides a durable
finish and stays flexible so that it won't crack)
